Interview With Dylan Gatewood: Paving the Way for Hip Hop's Independence

Q. Good day,
Dylan Gatewood! We appreciate you taking the time to speak with us. The first thing we want to know is How did you get into making music?

A. My journey in music began at the young age of 9, where I initially dabbled in creating simple, playful tunes as a kid. Gradually, my passion for music evolved, and I found myself drawn to the art of beat-making. This fascination with beats eventually led me to explore the world of DJing, where I could express my creativity through live performances and mixing tracks. As time went on, my love for music continued to grow, and I discovered another outlet for my artistic expression: rapping. It has been two years since I embarked on this new venture, and I have dedicated myself to honing my skills and refining my lyrical craft. From those humble beginnings as a young child experimenting with music, my journey has taken me through different phases and genres. Each step has shaped me as an artist and allowed me to explore various facets of the music industry. I am excited to see where this path will lead me next and how my musical journey will continue to unfold.

Q. Who are your musical influences and why?

A. When it comes to finding inspiration in music, I don't limit myself to a specific artist or genre. My taste in music is quite diverse, and I draw inspiration from a wide range of artists and styles. In my younger years, I gravitated towards artists like Juice WRLD and XXXTentacion, appreciating their unique approaches to music. However, my biggest inspirations stem from different sources. Lil Wayne stands out to me for his clever punchlines and metaphorical wordplay, which consistently impresses me. Artists like Yeat, Trippie Redd, and Lil Uzi catch my attention for their innovative use of their voices and vocal ranges, pushing the boundaries of what can be done with vocal delivery. These artists, among others in the same genre, inspire me to experiment and find my own unique style within the broader landscape of music. By embracing a wide range of influences and taking note of the distinct strengths each artist possesses, I'm able to broaden my own creative horizons and continue to develop my own musical voice.

Q. What has been your biggest career highlight so far?

A. In April, I had the incredible opportunity to perform at a show in College Park called "Back2Hell." It was an exciting event that brought together talented artists such as Arpsweatpants, Ryah, Gr8tah, and maxobeats. Being a part of this lineup was a significant milestone in my musical journey. The energy and camaraderie among fellow performers and the audience created an unforgettable experience. It was a night filled with electrifying performances and a shared love for music. This show not only allowed me to showcase my talent but also provided valuable connections within the local music scene. I am grateful for this memorable opportunity and look forward to many more exciting performances in the future.

Q. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

A. In the next five years, my aspirations extend beyond just rapping and the confines of music. While music will always hold a special place in my heart, I aim to explore and expand my creative horizons even further. I envision myself venturing into different artistic mediums and disciplines, exploring avenues such as songwriting, production, and perhaps even branching out into other forms of artistic expression like acting or visual arts. Additionally, I am excited to broaden my creative scope beyond music and dive into new ventures outside of the artistic realm. Whether it's exploring entrepreneurial pursuits, delving into other creative industries, or even engaging in philanthropic endeavors, I aim to make a positive impact and leave my mark on the world in various ways. While music remains a core part of my identity, I embrace the idea of personal growth and evolution. The next five years will be an exciting chapter of exploration and experimentation as I continue to follow my passions and explore new paths of creativity and self-expression.

Q. What Is One Message You Have for Your Fans and Supporters?

A. One important lesson I've learned is to trust in human nature rather than relying solely on individuals. Human nature encompasses the innate qualities and tendencies we all share, such as empathy, compassion, and a desire for connection. By placing our trust in the fundamental goodness within human beings, we can maintain a positive outlook and foster meaningful relationships. However, it is equally crucial to prioritize our mental health. Taking care of our emotional well-being should be a constant focus in our lives. This means being aware of our own needs, seeking support when necessary, and engaging in self-care practices that promote balance and inner peace. Prioritizing mental health allows us to navigate life's challenges more effectively and cultivate a greater sense of overall well-being. Ultimately, by trusting in the inherent goodness of human nature and investing in our mental health, we can create a solid foundation for personal growth, fulfilling relationships, and a more harmonious existence.
