Q. Good day, Zoe Rex! We appreciate you taking the time to speak with us. The first thing we want to know is How did you get into making music?
A. I've always had a thing for music, and it's not like I just picked it up professionally. It all began about five years back when I was chatting with a buddy on FaceTime. She noticed this dusty old guitar in my background and dared me to play something. Problem was, I couldn't play a note at the time. I mean, I tried lessons when I was seven, but they didn't really stick. So, she threw down a challenge: learn some chords to a song and call her back by the end of the week to sing it on FaceTime. The song I chose was Rihanna's "Love on the Brain," and I strummed it using a pick made from a Forever 21 gift card and used a pen and rubber band as a makeshift capo. But here's the thing, that week changed everything. I got hooked on songwriting, and it became my jam. Eventually, I moved beyond just strumming my guitar and got into the whole production game. It was an easy transition, thanks to all that time I spent with my trusty guitar. Gotta give a shoutout to Alizé for the inspiration.
Q. Who are your musical influences and why?
A. My primary musical inspirations stem from my parents, particularly in terms of the music I actively listen to and draw upon when I'm creating my own. They exposed me to a diverse range of genres and artists, significantly expanding my musical horizons. Among the artists who deeply influence me, I hold Mac Miller in particularly high regard, almost like a guiding force. Additionally, I find inspiration from the likes of Erykah Badu, Lil Peep, Alicia Keys, Sade, Led Zeppelin, Biggie, Kendrick Lamar, Nirvana, and Lana Del Rey.
Q. What has been your biggest career highlight so far?
A. One of the standout moments in my journey was performing at the Whisky A Go Go. While I believe it has become somewhat commercialized over time, the historical significance and the incredible energy that venue embodies remain unparalleled. Stepping onto the same stage where countless legends have showcased their art was a truly mind-blowing experience for me.
Q. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
A. Ideally, touring is the next step for me, as it has always been a cherished dream. I aim to maintain artistic control over my music while preserving the same passion and creativity that drive me today. My goal is to inspire and connect with a larger audience, continually demonstrating the transformative influence of authentic music and how it can mold the thoughts and attitudes of a generation. I aspire to breathe life into the millions who will have experienced my work by then, whatever that may entail for each listener.
Q. What Is One Message You Have for Your Fans and Supporters?
A. Success often comes from the ebbs and flows of life. It's important to recognize that perfection is an unrealistic expectation for yourself or anyone else. Avoid comparing yourself to others, but if you do, be kind to yourself. Hold yourself accountable without being overly critical. Remember, you're a human being; it's okay to feel emotions and fully experience them. Finding balance is crucial, as the ancient saying goes, "As above, so below." Above all, never lose sight of your goals. Muah.
