Q. Good day, Expjose! We appreciate you taking the time to speak with us. The first thing we want to know is What made you want to become a musician?
A. My journey with music didn’t really begin until high school. Although I always enjoyed certain songs, I lacked the confidence to sing myself. That’s still something I struggle with today. Thanks to my brother Rizzi, though, I started singing at school, and he even recorded me. You can find some of those early career moments on YouTube. Once I realized I had potential, I started taking music more seriously.
Q. Who are your musical influences and why?
A. My musical influences mainly come from the people I grew up with, many of whom are also musicians. Friends like OhItsFamous, Hoody Mason, The E, and A.o.D played pivotal roles in helping me discover my sound. However, if I had to name some mainstream influences, they would include Miguel, J. Cole, Frank Ocean, and Marc Anthony. Their styles and emotional depth have significantly influenced my own music and approach to songwriting. Without them, there wouldn’t be Expjose.
Q. What has been your biggest career highlight so far?
A. Stepping onto the stage is always one of the greatest moments for me. The adrenaline rush I experience is indescribable. It’s like José takes a backseat and watches Expjose shine. One of the highlights of my journey so far has been meeting the legendary Troy Taylor during a songwriting trip. The wealth of knowledge I gained from those seminars will forever impact my career.
Q. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
A. In five years, I envision myself performing on stages across the globe, writing songs for others, and producing music for fellow artists. My goal is to bring my unique sound to the mainstream. As Expjose from Danbury, CT, a state often overshadowed by its proximity to NY, I aim to change that narrative within the next five years.
Q. What Is One Message You Have for Your Fans and Supporters?
A. To all my fans and supporters, I want you to know that I have immense love and gratitude for each and every one of you. It’s incredibly touching to receive messages from people in other countries sharing how my music has touched and inspired them to pursue their own dreams. These conversations overshadow any self-doubt or struggles with depression I may face. As an independent artist, there are times when it feels like the results aren’t coming, but then I connect with someone who truly resonates with my message. In those moments, I find inspiration in knowing that my music has made a positive impact. So, to everyone who has ever listened to my music, I sincerely thank you.
