Beats to Big Dreams: An Interview With Rising Artist dappATL

Q. Good day, dappATL! We appreciate you taking the time to speak with us. The first thing we want to know is How did you get into making music?

A. When I was a sophomore in high school (2012), I found the app FL Studio on one of the first iPhones. Then I made my first beat. But then I found a cracked version of the real software on Pirate Bay. I started cooking and learning. I also passed it out to the homies—now we’re all producers and engineers.

Q. Who are your musical influences and why?

A. I’d have to say my musical influences range anywhere from Usher to Lil Wayne. Watching 106 & Park coming up just gave me so much Black boy joy that I exude our music from the core. Also, 808 Mafia, Pharrell, and Timbaland.

Q. What has been your biggest career highlight so far?

A. My biggest career highlight so far, was probably when Lil Baby tried to offer me a deal and a PJ last summer. I just wasn’t ready for the opportunity yet.

Q. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

A. In five years, I can hopefully say I see myself at my highest of heights and treating the Earth like it’s Heaven still.

Q. What Is One Message You Have for Your Fans and Supporters?

A. One message I have to both my friends and supporters is: stay in your peace and always give yourself credit, even when you’re feeling down.
