An Interview with exotik: Building Tracks That Echo Beyond the Beat

Q. Good day, exoti
k! We appreciate you taking the time to speak with us. The first thing we want to know is How did you get into making music?

A. I got into making music when I was about 7–8 years old. I remember always listening to Lil Wayne and T.I. growing up, and I would always imitate how they rapped. I saw Lil Wayne freestyle on YouTube or something at the time and was like, I can do that, and started putting words together and writing lyrics — and next thing you know, I wanted to be a rapper.

Q. Who are your musical influences and why?

A. I take a lot of influence from multiple genres, honestly — artists like Lil Uzi, Young Thug, and Future, to bands like Paramore, Hollywood Undead, and Cafunè. I feel like I take the most inspiration from Uzi though, because that’s who really taught me how to not give a f*** and how to be myself. So every time I record, I just try different sh*t — I just do me, and if I like it, I keep it; if I don’t, I change it. The way he can go on a track and do what he wants is the same way I do it.

Q. What has been your biggest career highlight so far?

A. I feel like my biggest highlight would either be my song with Yeat or one of my performances down here in Atlanta.

Q. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

A. In the next 5 years, I definitely see myself in a third world country performing in a big-ass stadium or something.

Q. What Is One Message You Have for Your Fans and Supporters?

A. One message I have for my supporters would be: keep going no matter how long it takes — the best part is the journey of it all, honestly.
