From Providence to the Mic: An Interview With Prov

Q. Good day, Prov!
We appreciate you taking the time to speak with us. The first thing we want to know is how would you describe your sound to someone who’s never heard your music before?

A. I would
describe my sound to someone who’s never heard my music before as emotional storytelling with melody. I rap a lot about heartbreak because I feel like it’s something most people can relate to. It’s not just my own pain either—I like to tell my friends’ stories and love stories through my music. That way, it feels bigger than just me; it’s about all of us, the things we go through, and the lessons we learn from them.

Q. Is there a specific song in your catalog that you feel defines who you are as an artist? Why that one?

A. My song “Wrong Me” from BBE is a track I believe really defines me because it’s about heartbreak, betrayal, and the emotions that come with it. People who hear it always tell me they can relate, and that’s what I want my music to do—make somebody feel like I’m putting their story into words when they couldn’t find the right ones themselves.

Q. If you could collaborate with any artist, living or dead, who would it be and why?

A.
If I could collaborate with any artist, living or dead, It would be several artist such as Lil Durk, Rylo Rodriguez, and Burna Boy. Lil Durk and Rylo Rodriguez inspire me because of the way they mix pain with motivation—real storytelling that hits home. And Burna Boy brings a whole different energy with his sound; he makes timeless music that connects across the world. A collab with any of them would let me show different sides of who I am as an artist.

Q. What's the biggest risk you've taken in your career so far, and what did you learn from it?

A. The biggest risk I’ve taken in my career so far was deciding to come back and take music seriously again with a manager backing me. Starting fresh isn’t easy—you have to rebuild momentum and show people you’re not the same as before. But I learned that you can’t wait for perfect timing. Sometimes you have to bet on yourself, trust your team, and put everything on the line. That’s what separates dreaming about it from actually doing it.
