A. I came up with my artist name from one of my favorite comic book heroes. I cycled through 2 other names before I got to Yng Robin. I’m a big Batman fan, but I wasn’t going to call myself that. And I feel like Robin is the greatest sidekick of all time. I wanted to make it my own twist, so that’s where Yng Robin came from.
Q. What has your journey as an artist been like up to this point?
A. My journey has been a lot of highs & lows. I started this journey kind of late in comparison to some other artists, but I’ve always been around music. I began back in 2009 officially. I followed behind the wrong people, so I was met with a lot of life lessons and some setbacks, but my faith & determination are what’s kept me going.
Q. What makes your music different from what listeners might hear from other artists in your genre?
A. My music is different from others because I’m really speaking from a place of authenticity. I mix a lot of my story with some of my close friends’ stories. I study a lot of great works and try to take from them but make it my own. My goal has always been to mix the essence of ’90s hip-hop with the present day. But also make it fresh and new.
Q. What was the moment that made you realize you wanted to pursue music seriously?
A. The moment I was freestyling back in 2009 on the campus of Maryland Eastern Shore, I knew this was something I wanted to do for life. It was a simple setting, just a couple of us playing around, but I got in a zone, and before you knew it, there were close to 30 people listening to us and cheering. I’ll never forget that feeling. I grew up around music since I was a baby, but this moment really solidified everything for me, and I began to dive into almost every artist I could think of and study them.
Q. What message or energy are you trying to bring to listeners through your music?
A. The message I’m trying to bring through my music is to never quit. Be yourself because we have enough people copying everyone else. Acknowledge God and truly believe in Him. Try your best. Lastly, if you gotta flex on people who doubted you, so be it. This is for all my late bloomers who finally popped off.
