An Interview With IAM Metric: How One Independent R&B Artist Is Building His Own Sound

Q. Good day, IAM Metric! We appreciate you taking the time to speak with us. To start things off, we would like to know, how would you describe your sound to someone who’s never heard your music before?

A. I feel like my sound bridges the gap between both the older generation and the current generation of what is going on in R&B now.

Q. Is there a specific song in your catalog that you feel defines who you are as an artist? Why that one?

A. At this period of time in my artistry, I would have to say my most recent single, “Drop It," best defines me as an artist. I feel like sonically it is the closest to what I am aiming for. I still believe my best work is still to come.

Q. If you could collaborate with any artist, living or dead, who would it be and why?

A. There are a lot of artists that I am currently listening to in the independent realm. I would love to collaborate with Dee Gatti, a dope R&B artist based out of Fort Worth, Texas. I feel like we could create some great music with both of our unique individual sounds.

Q. What’s the biggest risk you’ve taken in your career so far, and what did you learn from it?

A. The biggest risk I have taken on this journey so far has been really just betting on myself. I learned that the journey is much longer but much more rewarding when you invest in your individual growth.

Q. If this interview was the last thing someone read before listening to your music, what would you want them to know?

A. If this interview was the last thing someone read before listening to me, I would want them to know that I take a lot of pride in my work. I would want them to look at each song as a piece of art that reflects different parts of my life.

── IAM Metric's approach to music reflects an appreciation for blending different influences while continuing to shape a sound that feels distinctly his own. He also shows a strong sense of patience, understanding that meaningful progress takes time and requires personal investment. Rather than viewing each release as simply another song, he treats his work as a form of creative expression connected to his experiences. Overall, IAM Metric represents an artist who is still evolving while remaining confident that his strongest work is ahead of him.
