An Interview With King DADA: The Meaning Behind the Name, the Music, and the Mission

Q. Good day,
King DADA! We appreciate you taking the time to speak with us. The first thing we want to know is, how did you come up with your artist name, and what does it represent to you?

A. The name "King DADA" to me means the best of both worlds. My mother and my father. The King in my artist name came from the name my mother birthed me with. When it comes to "DADA," part of the name, I didn't even know it was a brand name at first, but I knew it as an art movement back then. Going against the grain of the classic art that was around and speaking against the war. So for me and my music, I know I’m doing just that. At least when it’s all said and done, that’s what’s noticed.

Q. What has your journey as an artist been like up to this point?

A. The first song I ever wrote was when I was 7. Slightly bad, but I did it. I was given a gift of music, so I’ve been singing and drumming my whole life. Did drumline for a couple years in high school and switched to musical theater senior year. During college pursuing acting, I started walking with Christ myself, and that’s when the pen got picked up for real, for real. Ever since, I have filled up one SoundCloud page, started another, did a collab EP, and did 2 solo albums and 3 solo EPs myself. Now back on the grind after not dropping for a while.

Q. What makes your music different from what listeners might hear from other artists in your genre?

A. I would say my music is different because I sort of come from battle rap, meaning the level of writing and intellect they have, I attack similarly. My music is for everyone, but more so those willing to listen with intent and love for art. I think my music can be very uplifting, inspiring, and engaging, and at the same time, vibes, energy, and sh** popping.

Q. What was the moment that made you realize you wanted to pursue music seriously?

A. I can’t say there’s a moment. It’s been in me my whole life, really, so nothing happened, but I can say that I don't want to waste anything that I have, and I have a gift. I believe and know for a fact that’s for a reason. Reasons for it, from my understanding, all go back to this: It’s what I do. And I love it.

Q. What message or energy are you trying to bring to listeners through your music?

A. I want people to stay authentic, trust themselves, and believe that everything happens for a reason. I'm all about spreading positive energy because I believe that's what leads to growth. We all go through struggles, so it's really about how you respond to them. If I had to sum it all up, my message is simple: trust what you know, believe in yourself, and remember that your biggest competition is always yourself.
