From the Block to the Booth: A Conversation with Emerging Artist G.I. on the Grit Behind the Music

Q. Good day,
G.I.! We appreciate you taking the time to speak with us. The first thing we want to know is, how did you come up with your artist name, and what does it represent to you?

A. For those who are unfamiliar with my artist name or the story behind it, G.I. is also what people call me on the street. It represents grind, hustle, ambition, leadership, my neighborhood, my block, me alone, and my masculine identity.

Q. What has your journey as an artist been like up to this point?

A. I've been on a long musical journey for some time now. Ever since I was a kid. Sometimes better than others, but it’s definitely been a great experience. Throughout this journey, I’ve been able to grow, evolve, and develop my craft while experiencing the many challenges and rewarding moments that come with pursuing music. From the early stages of discovering my passion to continuing to build my sound and identity as an artist, every step has contributed to the person and musician I am today.

Q. What makes your music different from what listeners might hear from other artists in your genre

A. I’ve always been one not to follow trends but to set them. A lot of artists that talk about the streets, real-life situations, the trap, and all that type of stuff may have their own sound, but for some particular reason, they still follow a trending wave, from a beat to lingo. With my music, you'll get me in my rawest form.

Q. What was the moment that made you realize you wanted to pursue music seriously?

A. Music was always a hobby and a form of therapy for me. Then you actually start seeing how this can change your life and make things better for you and your people, ya know. First, you see someone from your city make it, then you start seeing people whom you know personally, like family members and stuff, changing their situation through music. It was sort of a, "If they can do it, I can do it" type of thing, and it’s actually something I love to do. So I started taking it more seriously.

Q. What message or energy are you trying to bring to listeners through your music?

A. I want the supporters and listeners to hear my music and be able to relate to something I said or be able to see it when I say it. I want the music I put out to motivate people and to just let them know that they’re not alone when they go through hard times. Make them feel like I’m holding a conversation with them.
