Q. Good day, Ty Splash! We appreciate you taking the time to speak with us. The first thing we want to know is How did you get into making music?
A. I actually come from a background of great music history. I’m Rampage (The Last Boy Scout)’s godson. My father and him were great friends back in the ’90s alongside Spliff Star and Dinco D from Leaders of the New School, who’s like an uncle to me. My father had been schooling me for a long time growing up, listening to various beats from J Dilla, 9th Wonder, and Apollo Brown. So, my ear for beats and great music was already pre-installed. Long story short, I had an epiphany one day, dropped out of college, and started rapping with friends. Eventually, I ended up rapping as a duo with my younger brother $plash Herbs.
Q. Who are your musical influences and why?
A. I have a very unique list that, if you put these artists together combined, it’ll be me: CURRENC$Y, Tyler The Creator, Wiz Khalifa, King Louie, and Jeezy. Can’t forget about PHARRELL!.
Q. What has been your biggest career highlight so far?
A. My biggest highlight so far has been when I took the opportunity to go to SXSW from a Def Jam A&R I was working with at the time. I went off the strength of winging it. I took my cousin to be my security, rented a big body, took my own camera person with me at the time to vlog everything, and obviously $plash Herbs, my other half. It was really the fact that when we came, people were trying to figure out who we were and who we were signed to. Little did they know, I was just an independent artist straight out of Gwinnett County, GA (Nawf Atlanta) that nobody had even heard of. It definitely opened my eyes to what I was meant to be—an artist.
Q. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
A. In 5 years, I see myself at the high climax of my career, helping others with their craft from how far I’ve made it, and still continuing to make great music for the culture. I’ll also be maintaining a successful clothing business, @ilovefastmoney.
Q. What Is One Message You Have for Your Fans and Supporters?
A. The biggest message I have for my fans and supporters is: NEVER GIVE UP. If you give up, how would you know what’s at the end of the tunnel?
