An Interview With Laid Back P: The Detroit Artist Redefining Sound Without Limits

Q. Good day, Laid Back P! We appreciate you taking the time to speak with us. The first thing we want to know is how would you describe your sound to someone who’s never heard your music before?

A. The way I would describe my sound to someone who has never heard my music before is that there’s really no limit to what you might hear, because I like to switch it up and do melodies, autotune, etc. It’s different, but it’s still Detroit-style music.

Q. Is there a specific song in your catalog that you feel defines who you are as an artist? Why that one?

A. I would say my song “Type of Way” and my song “They Don’t Understand” are the perfect representation of how I came up and what I come from. One song is straight raw hip-hop, and the other is more of a new-generation melodic style.

Q. If you could collaborate with any artist, living or dead, who would it be and why?

A. If I could collaborate with any artist, living or dead, it would be Lil Wayne—and the answer is simple—he’s the GOAT (Greatest of all time) of all GOATs. He’s the inspiration, the reason why mostly everybody I grew up with makes music now, and he’ll always make sure you get bigger than him if you’re a real star.

Q. What's the biggest risk you've taken in your career so far, and what did you learn from it?

A. The biggest risk I’ve taken so far in my career would be putting money into my music and hoping to make it back. It’s really about putting yourself out there to be criticized.

Q. If this interview was the last thing someone read before listening to your music, what would you want them to know?

A.
If this interview was the last thing someone read before listening to my music, I would want them to know that it’s my time.
