From Guitar Lessons to Spotlight Sensation: An Interview with Lil Burgo

Q
. Good day, Lil Burgo!
We appreciate you taking the time to speak with us. The first thing we want to know is how did you get into making music?

A. I got into making music because I’ve always had a love for it for as long as I can remember. When I was in grade school, I took guitar lessons for a few years, so I guess that was when the true love for music started. I would write little songs with a few friends, and we would just pretend we were rockstars. I also had an odd love for English class—literature, vocabulary, phonics, etc. So that was a big part of what fueled my addiction to wordplay and extravagant lyrical builds.

Q. Who would you say are your musical influences and why?

A. When it comes to my music influences, Eminem is what started it all. I can still remember hearing “Love the Way You Lie” for the first time when it popped up on the radio while sitting in the backseat after a Walmart trip with my mother. As I got older, though, Lil Wayne, Kendrick Lamar, YG, and Drake started really reeling me in deeper with the way they were able to lyrically build off a beat. Without a doubt, my #1 influential musician now is Lil Durk, without question. I also take a lot of influence and motivation from Lil Gotit, Polo G, Lil Tracy, Pooh Shiesty, BabyTron, Icewear Vezzo, and Fenix Flexin.

Q. What has been your biggest career highlight so far?

A. My biggest career highlight I’ve had so far, to be honest, has probably been treating my music career as seriously as a career should be taken, rather than just continuing to talk about it and dream. Especially where I grew up, in a small-town setting, my dream was viewed as absolute insanity.

Q. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

A. When it comes to where I see myself in the next five years, I really never look that far ahead. Don’t get me wrong—I have plans and goals to accomplish—but I’m usually always focused on the present, the right here, right now. I focus on going step by step to stay focused and keep moving forward. Truthfully, I don’t like getting lost in the fantasy of the future.

Q. What is one message you have for your fans and supporters?

A. One message I have for both my fans and supporters: just know that even the smallest amount of love means everything, and stick with me. I know sometimes I take a minute to get things released and posted, but don’t worry—I’m here to stay. What’s coming blows all my previous projects out of the water. This is a new era: the Era of the Midwest Jit.
