An Underground Voice Refusing to Change: An Interview With UK Rapper MDMxrk

Q. Good day, MDmxrk! We appreciate you taking the time to speak with us. The first thing we want to know is, how would you describe your sound to someone who’s never heard your music before?

A. I’d describe my sound as underground British rap with strong influences from both the US mainstream and underground scenes.

Q. Is there a specific song in your catalog that defines who you are as an artist? Why that one?

A. A specific song in my catalog that I feel defines who I am as an artist is my track “Start Till the End.” That’s where I created my phrase, “double M then A D from the start till the end.” It really represents what I stand for—staying true to myself no matter what. From the beginning to the end, I’m not changing who I am.

Q. If you could collaborate with any artist, living or dead, who would it be and why?

A. If I could collaborate with any artist, living, I’d choose Nine Vicious. In my opinion, he’s one of the best in the underground scene right now. His sound pushed me to start rapping on his beats, and the next step from that is turning it into a real collaboration.

Q. What’s the biggest risk you’ve taken in your career so far, and what did you learn from it?

A. The biggest risk I’ve taken in my career thus far was releasing a track over a Nine Vicious beat. As someone still building a name, it meant stepping away from the typical British rap sound. But it taught me that I can make the music I want without worrying about whether people will reject it just because it’s different.

Q. If this interview was the last thing someone read before listening to your music, what would you want them to know?

A. If this interview was the last thing someone read before listening to my music, I would want them to know that it’s only the start.
